Dr. Alveda King Niece of Martin Luther
King, Jr. to speak at University of Maryland A recording of this talk is now available. Click here for mp3. Check back for video. Date: Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006 Time: 7-9pm Location: 0105 Jimenez Hall Daughter of slain civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King, and niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Alveda King has taken up the mission for human and civil rights herself, speaking out on today's pressing issues, one of which is abortion. She can speak from a unique perspective on the harm that abortion has inflicted on the Black/African-American community as well as our society as a whole. "My uncle once said the Negro cannot win if he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his children for personal comfort or safety," said Alveda. She has undergone both a voluntary abortion and an involuntary abortion, and now sees that "their [her children's] lives were terminated without their permission. That is a severe restriction of the individual rights of a human being." Dr. Alveda King has much more to say on the relationship between the Right to Life and the Civil Rights that her uncle died for. Don't miss this opportunity to hear Alveda King speak on such an important human rights issue! Fact: Blacks make up about 12% of the population in the US, but have 32%* of the abortions. This reflects an injustice to the black community, having lost many would-be doctors, scientists, teachers, etc to abortion. *Source: Jones RK, Darroch JE and Henshaw SK, "Contraceptive use among U.S. women having abortions in 2000–2001," Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, Guttmacher Institute, 2002, 34(6):294–303. |
